An opportunity exists to formally engage students in English language acquisition and aquatic education. Support from key stakeholder in the community; from education, NFP organisations, re-settlement groups, business groups and tour operators, lifegaurds services and individuals is required. Please post your comments on the latest drowning of the Sudanese man on the Gold Coast, how can we contribute towards the prevention of these deaths?
The S'women Program and the Aqua English Project are organising an important stakeholder meeting on the Gold Coast in order to formally address the needs of the CALD community with relation to drowning incidents in Queensland and Australia. What's the latest news? Well, we've just successfully finished the six week trial of a multicultural women's swimming program in conjunction with the Gold Coast City Council's 'Active & Healthy Mulicultural Program'. We had participants from Afghanistan, India, Iran, Denmark, South Africa, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea and Taiwan. All shared the same purpose; a passion and desire for the water and all it has to offer! The program ran from the 31st May to the 5th June in Southport on the Gold Coast, and was a great success!

Our thirty week program with the Islamic Women's Association of Queensland finished on the 2nd of April this year, after having to extend its operation to two separate locations! We had women from all over the world participating in the program, and who all now call Australia home. Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea....to name a few! We have even had requests from women who never knew how to swim previously, wanting to become swimming teachers themselves! From our perspective, there has never been anything more wonderful than watching someone who could not swim, had an enormous fear of the water, and very little English confidence, progress to a confident and alert swimmer, able to participate in squads, speak the "swimming lingo" and ask how they could become a teacher themselves!

More recently, we are proudly in the process of launching our SUMMER 2009 S'women Swimwear catalogue.....stay tuned to this website! We have three types of Muslim swimwear to offer...all swimwear is proudly designed and handmade on the GOLD COAST, after two years of feedback, suggestions and advice from the community of women who will be wearing them.

Please post us comments, we would love to hear from you....your thoughts, suggestions, criticism (within bloggin boundaries!)

Cheers!
